I’m not a big pop/ballad fan, but when it comes Utada Hikaru @ Hikki, she’s an exception! The first song I heard from her was First Love. It was her first official debut album in Japan and it was a big hit! And I really mean BIG HIT! like 34 x Platinum! and that was only in Japan alone. But, I didn’t get this album though (hehe, so much for being a fan huh?)

I finally got myself her 2004: Utada Hikaru Single Collection Vol.1. and that got me hooked as a fan! Didn’t hear much from her after that, until I watched Hana Yori Dango and heard her stunning voice singing the theme song Flavor of Life! As much as I was excited about the drama, I was also extremely happy to hear something from her after a long hiatus! Needless to say, Flavor of Life also became a big hit, making it the best seller single in 2007. Hey, even MatsuJun (of Arashi and holding the lead role in Hana Yori Dango as Doumyoji) admitted during a backstage talk with Hikki (in Music Station) that he have that song as his handphone ringtone! Kyaaa!! Sugoi ne?

Another one of her song, Prisoner of Love was also used as a theme song for a Japanese televison drama : Last Friends (I would recommend this drama as a must watch!). Currently, I am very much hooked on her song STAY GOLD! Definitely an outstanding ballad from Hikki!

Here’s the lyrics, in Japanese and with the english translation as well!

STAY GOLD (Utada Hikaru)

Kanashii koto ha kitto
Konosakinimo ippai aruwa
My Darling, Stay Gold
Kizutsuku koto mo daijidakara
I’m sure there are a lot of sad things
            Waiting for us up ahead
            My darling stay gold
            Because pain is precious too

Daisuki dakara zutto
Nannimo shinpai iranaiwa
My Darling, Stay Gold
Mujakini waratte kudasaina
Itsumademo…
           *I’ll always love you
So there’s nothing to worry about
           My darling stay gold
           Smile innocently for me, forever

Shuushoku mo kimatte
Asondebakari irarenaine
Otona no joushiki ya chie mi ni tsukeru no mo ii
Aah Kyou ha konomama
Good Night
Once you’ve got a job, you can’t waste all your time having fun
You should learn to have common sense and wisdom like an adult
Ah, that’s all for today, good night

Kawariyuku no ga
Hito no kokoro no tsune dato iimasuga
Ne daarin Your Soul
Yasashiku kagayaki tsuzukeruwa
They say the thing that’s always changing
           Is people’s hearts
           But hey darling, your soul
           Continues to shine gently

Daisuki dakara zutto
Nannimo shinpai iranaiwa
My Darling, Stay Gold
Mujakini waratte kudasaina
Itsumademo…
           *I’ll always love you
So there’s nothing to worry about
           My darling stay gold
           Smile innocently for me, forever

Daisuki dakara zutto
Nannimo shinpai iranaiwa
My Darling, Stay Gold
Mujakini waratte iraretara
Itsunohimo…
           I’ll always love you
So there’s nothing to worry about
           My darling stay gold
If you could just smile innocently for me, everyday

P/S: I’m loving her short hair!

hello! i searched all over for a *good* english translation of this song.. and yours is definitely the best out there :) though i have one thing i need to say.. it’s not the complete lyrics.. the first part is missing!
“anata no hitomi no oku ni hisomu shounenn
(the young boy hidden deep within your eyes)
watashi no honnou kusugutte yamanai
(continues to entice my instincts)
aah douka sonomama
(aah somehow, let it continue)
good luck
(good luck)” is what i found from other pages.. would you mind translating that part to normal english for me? ^^ unless that’s the best one can get out of it of course… either if you edit this or if you wanna email it for me i’d really appreciate it! thanks again!

ah! sorry for not replying ur comment!

i would like to meet her too! she’s quite funny too. i have seen her interview on domoto kyoudai. since she is able to speak english fluently, then it won’t be a problem for us to tell her how much we love her work!

hehe, I liked her song too… especially First Love… but I never seen her b4… LoL like her song only hehee

Hi hi! Thanks for dropping by! Which reminds me, I need to put you under my blogroll. Hehehe. Nway, I’ve never seen Hikki personally as well, though I would love to have the chance to. At least if I do really get to see her, she would be able to understand and speak in English – unlike many Jap artistes. Hehehe. I like most of her songs! Some doesn’t really go to my liking, but I still love her musics!

ah… prisoner of love was the song made me addicted to it for one month and i have been listening to it everyday from 9 -5. and it was that song that made me dig other hikki’s songs… i have first love song in my laptop but i never enjoyed other than thinking it as another ballad but until all my friends told me how much they love first love i decided to find out the translation and realised how poignant and sad the lyrics means. and now that song is my vocal lesson assignment. cool…

nice to meet u by the way.
